Een groep krijgsgevangenen graaft op een Grieks eiland naar oudheidkundige schatten. Dit in opdracht van de Oostenrijkse kampcommandant Hecht wiens toewijding aan antiek, geld en vrouwen het wint van zijn toewijding aan Hitler. Terwijl de gevangenen zich bezighouden met de opgravingen en het bedenken van een ontsnappingsplan verzint het Griekse verzet allerlei plannen om de bezetter tegen te werken.
