Het gezelschap van Thorin Eikenschild, bestaand uit dertien dwergen en de hobbit Bilbo, heeft het koninkrijk Erebor heroverd op Smaug, maar onbedoeld ook een dodelijke kracht losgelaten op de wereld. Door wraak gedreven zorgt Smaug voor vele slachtoffers onder de inwoners van Meerstad. Thorin is geobsedeerd door zijn heroverde rijkdom en heeft zijn vriendschap hiervoor over, waarmee Bilbo gedwongen wordt een wanhopige en gevaarlijke keuze te maken. Maar er zijn grotere gevaren op komst. Gandalf ziet namelijk dat de gevaarlijke vijand Sauron enorme legers met ork naar de Eenzame Berg stuurt.
