Gorillas in the Mist is de succes-verfilming van een waar gebeurd verhaal. In 1967 ging Dian Fossey naar Afrika om daar de bedreigde berggorilla's te bestuderen. Haar leven verandert radicaal. Met de liefde en inzet onderneemt zij pogingen om de apen voor de definitieve vernietiging te behoeden. Ze neemt de strijdbijl op tegen stropers, die enkel en alleen op geld uit zijn. Zij offert haar eigen geluk, haar gezondheid en ten slotte haar leven op voor het behoud van de gorilla's.
